Ventilator Associated Pneumonia by Acinetobacter baumannii And antimicrobial susceptibility pattern
Authors
Abstract:
Background: Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP) is one of the serious complications of ventilator support occurring in ICUs. The aim of this study was to determine the susceptibility pattern of Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) isolated from patients with VAP by two methods: disk diffusion and E. test. Methods: This descriptive-cross sectional study was conducted in the four ICUs of Rasoul-e-Akram Hospital in Tehran, from October 2016 to November 2017. A total of 58 endobronchial aspirates from intubated patients who had been clinically diagnosed to have VAP by A. baumannii were studied. The in vitro susceptibility was determined by disk-diffusion and broth microdilution MIC methods. The results were used in chi2 assay to express a meaningful relationship. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: With the E. test method high percentage of isolates were resistant to levofloxacin (100%), carbapenems (meropenem: 93.10%, imipenem 70.69%), piperacillin-tazobactam (50%) and aminoglycosides (gentamicin 41.38%). The most sensitive antibiotic was colistin. Conclusion: Antimicrobial resistance to A. baumannii in ICUs is increasing, and the findings of the study have shown that colistin is the only drug with relative efficacy.

Tea as a source of Acinetobacter baumannii ventilator-associated pneumonia?
To the Editor: Acinetobacter baumannii increasingly has been involved as an agent of hospital outbreaks worldwide. The most common site of nosocomial infections is the respiratory tract, especially in ventilated patients, followed by bloodstream infections. The incidence of Acinetobacter species as a cause of nosocomial pneumonia has increased despite advances in the management of ventilated pa...
full textEfficacy of colistin/rifampin combination for treatment of ventilator associated pneumonia caused by carbapenem resistant Acinetobacter baumannii: brief report
Background: It is difficult to treat infections caused by Acinetobacter baumannii due to multiple drug resistance. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of combination therapy with two broad-spectrum antibiotics colistin and rifampin on clinical and para clinical indexes of the patients with ventilator-dependent pneumonia due to imipenem-resistant to A. baumannii in intensive care...

background ventilator- associated pneumonia (vap) continues to complicate the course of 8-28 % patients receiving mechanical ventilation. the mortality rate for vap is high, ranges from 24-50% and can reach 76% in some specific settings or when lung infection is caused by high risk pathogens. the etiologic agents widely differ according to the population of patients in an intensive care unit, d...
full textUse of adjunctive aerosolized antimicrobial therapy in the treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii ventilator-associated pneumonia.
BACKGROUND Adjunctive aerosolized antibiotics (AAA) have been recommended in the setting of Gram-negative ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), but little is known about their influence on clinical outcomes. OBJECTIVE To assess outcomes associated with AAA for the treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) and Acinetobacter baumannii (AB) VAP. METHODS A retrospective, single-center cohort s...
full textPrognostic factors associated with mortality of drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii ventilator-associated pneumonia
BACKGROUND Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) caused by drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii is associated with high mortality in critically ill patients. We identified the prognostic factors of 30-day mortality in patients with VAP caused by drug-resistant A. baumannii and compared survival outcomes among multidrug-resistant (MDR), extensively drug-resistant (XDR) and pandrug-resistant (P...
full textIncidence and predictors of 14-day mortality in multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii in ventilator-associated pneumonia.
INTRODUCTION Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) caused by multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (MDR-AB) is common in hospitals and impacts patient survival. We determined the incidence of MDR-AB VAP in critical care units and examined the predictors of 14-day mortality in these patients. METHODOLOGY A retrospective case series study was conducted at a tertiary referral teaching hosp...
